United States Secretary for War, who had arrived here that
morning. He expressed his appreciation of the manner in
which any offensive demonstration had been stopped in the
Colony and willingly acceded to my suggestion that he
should meet a few representative Hongkong Chinese to hear
their views on the administration of the Exclusion Law in
the United States.

On the 5th. instant Dr. Ho Kai,
and Mr. Wei Yuk, Chinese Members of Council, Mr. -
Fung Wa Chúin, Chairman of the Commercial Union and Compra-
-dore of Messrs. Shewan, Tomes and Company, Mr. Lau Chú Pak
Member of the Sanitary Board, Mr. Ku Fai Shan, Director of
the Tung Wa (Chinese Hospital) and Mr. Leung Pui Chi,
Director of the Po Leung Kuk (Chinese Institution for the
Protection of Women and Girls), attended at my office to
hear Mr. Taft's views and to lay their own before him. I
annex a copy of the Memorandum of the conversation which
was furnished me by Mr. Taft and which I handed this morn-
-ing to Dr. Ho Kai to utilize as he might think fit.

The publication of this Memoran-
-dum will probably assist in clearing the situation and I
do not expect any serious trouble in connection with the
"boycott"
